I've notice a couple of false neutrals going from 1st to 2nd recently too,
but on paying attention found I wasn't preloading the shifter much or at
all like I usually do.  I suspect this is because I know my shifter rubber
is about worn through and will fall off sometime soon...does anyone know a
ready source of those?  One that would fit from another brand would be
fine...

Some of the shifts feel like a good solid "thunk" to me, but I don't think
I've ever hear a "pop" as you describe. 

Also, any changes to your oil lately?  Changing brands/formulations can
have an effect.
