CHARLESTON, S.C. - In America's most mannerly city, it would be downright rude to rev one's
motorcycle engine too loudly, the city council says.
But some bikers planning to attend a nearby rally next week say an ordinance approved Tuesday
is not hospitable at all.
"It's scaring the bikers. We're not welcome," said Tommy Murray of Hanahan. "You're not going
to go somewhere where you're not welcome."
The council amended the city's noise ordinance to ban loud revving of engines. Supporters say
it's aimed at noisy motorcycles and is not intended to spoil the rally.
As many as 50,000 bikers are expected to attend the Heritage Motorcycle Rally next week in
suburban Ladson, although bikers are expected in downtown Charleston and other areas as well.
Charleston again this year topped the unofficial list of America's best-mannered cities
compiled by etiquette expert Marjabelle Young Stewart.
The law only will be applied when someone loudly revs their engine or speeds away loudly, said
Charleston Police Maj. Herbert Whetsell.
"Not every motorcycle is inordinately noisy, and not every inordinate noise comes from a
motorcycle," said Caroline Cleveland, head of a local neighborhood association. "But wherever
it comes from, noise is a problem."
