[ST] synchros

There is no synchro-mesh in motorcycle gear boxes because they're constant
mesh. All the gear pairs are engaged with each other all of the time.
Synchro-mesh is simply small intermediate gears that are designed to get the
pairs of gears spinning at the same speed before they engage.

Yes the gears are in constant mesh, but so are synchromesh gearboxes. The part that causes the clunking, the dogs at the end of the gears that engage as the gears are shifted, are not. This is the spot where the synchros live in a synchromesh gearbox. They are serrated rings that act as brakes so the gears mesh at the same speed. They also mesh with a lot of little dogs, instead of the half dozen or less that motorcycles have. Lining the dogs up so they will engage smoothly, is the trick. You may notice that your bike won't go into gear when you're stopped. That's because the dogs are lined up end to end, and you have to slip the clutch a little to mislaying them, so they can engage in their respective slots.
