I went a step further and had a local exhaust shop tack weld the
nuts to the bolt.  This tool lives in my tank bag.  An advantage
to this set-up is it allows one to torque the axle bolt (60nm =
~43ft/lbs) on reassembly.

Just for the record, the late hex-head caliper bolts are 14mm.
