RE: [ST] Oh the conflicting info! WAS-> Need Oil Filter Alternati ves

To the exact letter? Yes follow the manual but to the letter is a bit
extreme. It won't hurt things if you overshoot the milage by a couple
hundred miles. It won't hurt if you overshoot the breakin RPM limit by 500
RPM. The most important thing is not to keep the RPM steady, fluctuate it
often but stay close to the guidelines (an extra 500 RPM isn't going to ruin
things). I've broken in 4 motorcycles before my RS and I just ride it like
I'm gonna ride it, staying within mfr. guidelines, and NEVER had a problem.
If you're going to accelerate hard after the break-in, then do it during the
break-in. Just don't exceed the recommended RPM limits by much and keep
varying the RPM's within the specified limits. Change the oil (within a few
hundred miles of specified) and you'll be fine. It's not rocket science.

As far as oil filters go, I've always used OEM parts. But now that I see
the emails flying around, I've asked a guy at work who races cars. After
discussing it, a filter is a filter. They're all basically the same except
for the particle size they calim to filter. But 10 micron vs. 20 micron,
what's the difference? Will a 10 micron particle getting through cause
grief? I guess it depends on the engine.

After discussing it, my thoughts are, try to find out what the smallest
particle the OEM filter can filter then compare that to the FRAM or what
ever. If they are the same or very close, then use the less expensive one.
There shouldn't be a difference if they filter similar size particles. If
we don't know what size particles the Triumph OEM filter will filter, then
it's personal preference. Stick with the OEM or take a chance and use
something different.

Let's apply reliability statistics: If a minimum of 461 people run the FRAM
oil filter for 10 hours, without one engine failure due to particle damage,
then you have a 90% level of confidence that the lot of 461 FRAM filters
will only have
.5% defective. (or 2 of the 461 filters will be bad)

RTFM! Follow the instructions in the owner's manual or Triumph factory
service manual to the exact letter. You will not be disappointed. I
did and my bike uses NO OIL WHATSOEVER! I can treat it nice or like I
stole it (after it's warmed-up) and it never burns oil and is very strong.
