I wish I could include a diagram to explain it, but I'll try to do it
with words.
If you picture the the hub as a clock, the axle can be rotated around
the dial. 12 o'clock at the top and 6 o'clock at the bottom will have
give you the same chain adjustment, only the 12 o'clock position
takes away your ground clearance.
9 o'clock gives you the shortest chain adjustment, and 3 o'clock
provides the longest.
So starting at 9 o'clock, you want to go counter clockwise to 3
o'clock, passing through 6 o'clock.
You could also go clockwise from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock, but that
will take you on the 12 o'clock route, which again reduces your
ground clearance.
So if you have to turn it clockwise to lengthen the chain adjustment,
your using the wrong side of the dial.
