Either you are standing on the wrong side of the bike and reaching around
(That's a joke son!) or your axle is in the upper (wrong) position.  If
turning clockwise tightens your chain then you should turn it
counterclockwise until it loosens and then begins to tighten again.  You
will not believe how much better your bike handles with the proper geometry
restored.
