RE: [ST] ST transmission/chain 'catch'

The sprockets are both snug, the swing-arm moves only in the way it is
supposed to. The chain did need a lube job, so I went ahead and did that.

I measured the movement of the chain (with bike on it's center stand), and
it only moved by about 1". The service manual called for 1.4-1.6", so I
adjusted the eccentric to allow this. I found that 1.5" of play allowed the
chain to slap against the bottom side of the swing arm! A "clunk" of a
different - and bad - kind. So I tightened it back up to about 1".

While I had it up, I adjusted the suspension settings to tighten them up
(not very scientific, I know, adjusting so many variables at once).

Now, after a quick ride around, the 'catch' seems to be all but gone. Maybe
that's me adjusting my throttle control now that I'm looking for it, maybe
it was the chain lube, maybe it was the chain and suspension
adjustment...who knows?

I'll keep an ear out for it over the next week or two and see how it goes.

Thanks for the help and advice!

Thanks Jim and Ken; I'll give all of these a look today.

Actually, you might want to check to see if the chain is too tight. We
were riding this summer with a group and one of the members reported
similar symptoms. Noisy at low speed..clunking. When we checked, the
chain was too tight. After loosening a bit, all noises went away.

Don't go by "feel" measure it.
