Hey, I'm in NJ too, and got an even bigger surprise.  I was insured with
Universal Underwriters.  It was costing me just under $500/year.  (age 48
and no claims or points on my license).  They just got bought out, by
Foremost Insurance, and they gave me a nice Christmas present: my rates went
up to $768/year.  There was only one other company to choose from AFAIK, and
their rates were just a tad less with less coverage.  Monopolies are
wonderful, aren't they.....

Try Rider Insurance Co. 973-258-9500 in NJ. At least you can get the price
down below 600 per year.
