I worked at a Suzuki dealer back in 1985 and at the time we could
show you a factory invoice of what appeared to be what the dealer
paid, but with various promotions and incentives, the dealer actually
paid less then the invoice cost.
Still, there were bikes that went out the door making only a few
hundred dollars profit. The bigger the bike, and more in demand it
was, the larger the profit margin. We generally made about $500
profit on a $4000 GSXR (boy were those the days!) while a little 50cc
motocross bike had a profit of $50 if we sold it at MSLP. And most
dads would really try to nickel and dime us on those! Since I got
something like 10% commission on the profit, how hard do you think I
worked selling those little motocross bikes? $5 for an hour of sales
and paper work? Even then that stunk.
