RE: [ST] Getting the shaft (why not belt?)

I had a Harley Davidson Sportster 883 before I had any class. I bored
it out to a 1203 and put lighting heads on it. To make a long expensive
story short I pretty much built a white lighting motor in my sporty. I
had it dynoed and it made over 78 bhp at the wheel and 72 ft-lbs. I
took it to the local drag strip on a regular basis and for some strange
reason I kept breaking the H-D belt. The dealership that I was getting
them warranted at could not explain why it was happening. After Harley
warranted three belts they quit. At that point I switched over to a 530
chain. Basically what I am getting at is that I do not believe anyone
who says that a belt is as strong as a chain. None of the belts broke
at the strip, if I remember most of them broke with a short shift into
second. And yes, I did keep the recommended tension on them. I was
getting around 1000-1500 miles per belt and so far I have gotten over
12000 miles on my factory chain and it began to stretch and I have 8000
miles on this one and no broken chains yet. Just my two cents.

If there is a stronger belt that they are using for the Buells that they
do not use in the sporty's, I do not know. I have one of the broken
belts in my closet, I held on to it to show people that did not believe
me that I was able to break them. Mine has 9 bands of Kevlar in it.

On a side note I was able to dip into the upper 12's in the 1/4 with my
240lbs on its back.
