Speaking as one who's (late) ST had a persistent if erratic sprag clutch
malfunction, a bump start is the only way if you're lucky [sic] enough
to konk out on the level.

First gear is a no-no. There's too much resistance for the momentum you
can impart. Third and above don't churn the engine enough. So second it
is.

Run like billy-o by the side, with the bike in gear and the clutch
disengaged. Then when you've hit terminal velocity, jump aboard
side-saddle at the same time releasing the clutch. Keep going til the
bike fires then cock a leg over and drive off into the sunset. Better if
you've got assistance. FWIW, an obligatory practice for (European)
racers prior to around the mid 1970s.
