[ST] Help --- electrical demons!!!!!

Hi Gang,

Just got the 'ol scoot out of mothballs and readied for the summer riding
season.

Problem: the battery has been intermittently on a battery tender all
winter. It would not kick the bike over. I attached a battery
booster/jump starter and it started right up. Took the bike battery to
Batteries Plus to have it tested. It showed 12 volts. He attempted to put
a load on it (not sure if it recreated the staring of the bike), but also
showed 12 volts. Went back home, took baking soda and cleaned the (-)
cable as thoroughly as possible to remove any residue. Reattached
everything (put the battery back on the battery tender for a minute and it
went to 'green'). Once again the bike would not turn over. Reattached
the battery booster, and presto, it started right up.

I'm completely confused (and pretty electrically illiterate). I would
appreciate any help in trouble shooting/problem solving. Is it possible
that the battery could register 12 volts, but still not be strong enough to
kick the bike over???? Enquiring minds want to know??? Is it possible that
there is corrosion built up on the negative cable inside of the housing and
I can't see it? This whole problem, based on it starting immediately with
booster and the fact that the battery 'appears' to be good, feels like some
sort of resistance which the booster overcomes by 'overpowering' it.

Much thanks in advance for any help.
