RE: [ST] 17/45 gearing.

My '02 RS has 108 links in the chain. Stock gearing is 19/43. I now have
a 45 tooth rear on it and it fits fine. I have a Triumph 17 toot front I
could fit for 17/45. I'm sure it will work and have some adjustment left.
In fact, the axle position would probably move back to about the same
position it was with the stock gearing.

Changing yours from 18/43 to 17/45 would be a 10.8% change. 4700 would
change to 5200; not too much IMO.

I will trade my NIB Triumph 17-tooth front for a NIB Triumph 18-tooth front
sprocket.

I have heard several accounts of people changing to a 17/43 gearing on
Sprints, but has anyone changed to a 17/45 gearing? Can you retain the
stock chain length?

This changes the final drive ratio from 2.39 to 2.65. Based on some rough
math (which I think was originally from a spreadsheet by Keith 'BRG'
Tynan), this would change a 75mph cruising speed from 4700 rpm (on a 1999's
18/43 ratio) to around 5100rpm. Since I don't do a lot of high speed
riding, I don't mind the loss of top speed potential.

Any thoughts?
