George, I've had a similar experience while slowly crawling through 
Zion National Park in 100-degree heat. My low gas light popped on while 
I still had about half a tank, and the fuel gauge dropped to empty. 
After I got moving again and the bike cooled down a bit, the sender 
started working again.

Its happened maybe once again since then, in similar circumstances. 
(I'm using the latest-and-greatest fuel sender.)

Eh, its British... :-)
