I was quoted aprox $1600AUD ($1086US) to do the full "by the book" service at
several Triumph dealers.  I think I'll take your advice and "buy" the book.
 I can't understand it myself, do they used gold-plated shims or something?
 The mechanics claim most of it is labour, well if that's the case I come pretty
cheap - and I'll have some fun as well!  Is the service manual available on
the net?  Thanks Dave,

You need a service manual to do the work, at least I do. The manual has a 
maintenance checklist, near the beginning. I don't recall anything "special".
