He's not rooting against success - I think you've missed his point: he
appears to be rooting against success reaped by simply purchasing one, and
subsequently rooting for anybody who overcomes the stacked odds.  If I'm
interpreting him correctly, it's sort of like, "sure someone can go buy an
R1 and win a race being fought by mainly standard 500cc bikes; but you've
got to root for/love the guy on the 500cc standard who seems to be able to
keep up and can possibly beat the guy with superior equipment."  So it's not
about rooting for some particular lesser team, but rather rooting for any
lesser team who fights that much harder to overcome.

Oh sure, there's a team with a heritage.  They were unceremoniously
disbanded after their last title, purely for financial reasons.  Where were
the Angels, Diamondbacks, etc this year?  Rooting against a team's success
is about as logical as f**king for virginity.
