Re: [ST] Temperatures

I'm beginning to sense an undercurrent of concern over the
temperatures mentioned in this thread. Let's look at that.

In the interests of operating efficiency, the manufacturers
intent is for the engine to quickly come up to the intended
temparature - in most cases in the 87 - 92C [188 - 197F] range.
The thermostat maintains that temperature by opening and closing
the passage to the hose which allows coolant to bypass the
radiator. While maintaining a speed above say 30mph, the flow of
air through the radiator is sufficient, even in triple digit
temps, to keep the coolant in the radiator cool enough so the
engine stays within design temps. When the temps rise above
these limits in traffic, the radiator fan is switched on - with
our bikes, by the ECU - and runs until the temps return to the
low limit. These parameters are established after exhaustive
testing by the development engineers and IMO, any attempt to
modify them is ill-advised. Lower operating temps will reduce
combustion efficiency (performance) and the engine oil won't rise
to optimum temps, increasing oil contamination.

Nuff said?
