[ST] Grease your Balls!!!

Hello, everyone, I was doing some cleaning and adjusting on my new ( to me ) 01 ST and I found the
Shifter ends were full of white corrosion.  This was not dried lithium grease either.
So...Grease Your Balls!  
 
What do you recomend for lubing the chain?

I am NOT going to replace the tar the previous owner/shop used.
I had to use gasoline to remove it, Simple Green would not touch it.
