The problem is that a non-Triumph motorcycle dealer is not going to 
have the 46mm socket, so towing your bike to a dealer who can't take 
the wheel off isn't going to get you back on the road. Of course, we've 
recently learned that VW and BMW automotive repair places are likely to 
have a 46mm socket, but carrying one with you can save you the hassle 
of having to schlep around to multiple shops.

I guess it depends on how prepared you like to be, and what your 
tolerance for hassle is. I was a Boy Scout, so I like to be pretty well 
prepared, and I'm fairly impatient, so I don't like a lot of hassle. :-)
