One symptom is that you'll have trouble trying to get it adjusted properly
(freeplay adjustment).

Another way to tell if it's stretched out is to grasp the link at 3
o'clock on the rear sprocket (the rearmost link) and see if you can pull
it away (rearward) off of the sprocket.  If you get a couple-few
millimeters of movement there you know it's stretched as a new chaing
won't do this.
