I replaced my chain at the 18,000 mile service interval.  I was noticing
that the bike was a bit jerky at parking lot speeds.  I just thought that
the chain just needed adjustment.  Once adjusted, the tire was turned half
way around and the chain went slack again, which was a sign that it had
stretched unevenly.  Fortunately the sprockets did not show much wear.  I
must have caught it in time.  Good luck.
