Blake, I've done similar research and use Delo 5w-40 synthetic in our
TDI.  It meets the same specs as Rotella T and has a much better case
price locally.  But I'm concerned about the '5w' cold viscosity
rating.

FWIW, in addition to info already quoted in this thread, the factory
manual (pn 3850760, issue 3 of 10.99) states on pg 8.5:

"Do not use 10w rated oils with a hot viscosity rating greater than
40.  For example, DO NOT use 10w-50."

and

"Do not use oils with a cold viscosity rating of 0w or 5w."
