I had a similar problem with my '01 ST, as you recall, Rupert.  Turned out
to be a broken wire coming off the bundle near the headstock, a wire going
to the starter,  Took Mac at Canton, a very competent mechanic, 1.5 hours to
diagnose- out of warranty.
