Cleaning the pistons will improve the feeling for
about 500 miles and then you'll be back with the
spongy feeling again.
The best "trick" I found on this list is actually to
regularly (one full night, once a week in my case)
hold the brake lever squeezed to the handlebar with
velcro straps. It pushes off the grim around the
pistons seals and reduce cleaning intervals to one
every six to nine months. As to the oversized M/C, I
have it and it gives much better feeling and power at
the end of a heavy braking phase, when you pull very
hard.
