The conductivity of petrol is so low that 12V wouldn't even get it warm. 
  If the petrol vapour ended up enclosed somewhere where there was a 
chance of a spark, e.g. the rear brake switch when it was pressed, it 
might just get ignited, but I think the chances are stacked highly 
against even this.

I'm sure I read a case of a Speed Triple catching fire due to the 
cracked fuel connectors about a year ago.  In the UK from memory.  The 
only details I can recall were that the bike was doing about 40mph and 
the rider stopped the bike and jumped clear as it caught fire.  Puddles 
of plastic on the road around the metal remains.

In general petrol in liquid form is reasonably safe, which is why we 
have to mix it with air and compress to 10:1 and hit with a strong spark 
to get it to ignite with real force.
