[ST] Re: st-digest V2004 #472

With respect to tyres/tires - I have had the Avon A45/46 pair on my ST for
4000 miles and have not had any problems - love them, in fact - but I do
have a problem with my care tyres which possibly may have something to do
with all this. After 2 sets of the OEM Pirelli P Zeros with which my
Jaguar XJR showed terrible snow and ice handling characteristics (and each
set only lasted about 13000 miles!) I looked for a more aggressive winter
tyre. The only Z-rated tyre made in the appropriate size is the
Continental Extreme so I purchased a set of them. As I drove them, there
was a definite vibration suggestive of poorly balanced wheels/tyres and
went back to the supplier. He said one was "a smidge" out of balance, but
I had the same feeling as I left the store. Interestingly, the sensation
went away after driving for a while and I have come to realise that this is
a characteristic of the tyres. It appears that if the car is left standing
(overnight in colder weather, several days in warmer weather) the tires
develop a flat spot. As they warm up the sensation disappears. I have
checked and rechecked inflation pressures many times. The winter handling
of my car has been transformed but with this minor annoyance. I wonder if
there could be a parallel with the bike tyres?

Paul.
