Tom, congrats. Word of warning though. Old bikes are really addictive! =
 I
thought I could handle "just one" but no way. I got a complete '69 Duc
Srcambler in need of a resto, next thing I know I have a storage unit of =
old
Duc and MotoGuzzi parts! Check out some of the stuff at my under
construction website: www.diyhomegarage.com
Also links to the guys I mailed about are:
http://www.triumphday.com/britech/default.asp?fromflyer=3Dtrue (don't =
worry
about the "Greg Nichols Story" bit. It will auto re-direct.

Have fun and enjoy your new toy. And one thing nice about old bikes and
regs: They only have to pass if the had the stuff originally. Ie: if =
your
Tiger didn't have turn signals originally, it doesn't need them now.

Andy and all:

Thanks for your response and to everyone else you gave me some good =
advice.
I decided to bite the bullet and get the Tiger. It will join the stable
with my Sprint ST. It's a running bike and unless the seller falls =
through,
he should be delivering it to my house today!!

Andy I live in Northern VA about 30 miles west of DC. So if you can =
send me
a recommended mechanic, engine guy, please do so.

One of the first things I'm doing is inspecting it to see what I need to =
do,
if anything to get it up to VA spec. I want to ride it and it will need =
to
pass VA inspections. =20

Tom, there are more parts available for the '71 Tiger than you can
imagine. I get vintage parts faster than I do for the '94 XR100 Honda I
use to teach kids to ride.

Resources: RotLE, see below, we discount European Spares parts to
members.

Try here for a list of others: http://www.hermit.cc/mania/tmc/inde2.htm

You should be aware that most 1971's, the first Oil-in-Frame year, have
a higher sub-frame than '72 on, resulting in a higher seat height.
Arguably, this is the least desirable unit 650. Some '71's had the
lower sub-frame found on all later models.

Although oil leaks are common on all vintage BritBikes that are not
carefully assembled, be alert for oil dripping from the base of the
frame spine, as this can indicate a cracked frame. Since a little oil
goes a long way, you may have to clean the bike and then warm it up,
using talcum powder to find the source of any leaks. If the bike is in
pieces, inspect around the swing arm attachment points on the frame for
cracks.

The Triumph unit twin with a single carb is the probably one of the best
vintage twins you can find and you won't be disappointed in performance,
reliability or availability of spares. Tell me where you live and I'll
recommend an engine builder if you need one.

Good luck with the Tiger and Happy New Year!

Andy
