Greetings & Happy New Year,
   Harry, try this, get some "Scotch-Brite" abrasive pads and  scrub the 
black coating off. It will leave a nice bright look and the level  marks will 
still be black. Be sure to clean the dipstick off very well after  scrubbing, you 
do not want to get any of the "Scotch-Brite" stuff inside the  crankcase.
