Dave,

My armchair theory:  since momentum is mass x velocity, once you contact
the ground and part company with your beloved ST, the bike enjoys
significantly greater momentum than you (unless your weight approaches
500lbs!).  Add to that frictional forces of larger surface areas of leather
or ballistic nylon or whatever compared with your bike's relatively small
contact patch of handlebar and peg - at least initially.
