OK everyone.  My question is one of ignorance not stupidity.  A simple yes

The main problem is the distance from your eyes.  Your glasses sit about a
quarter - to - a half an inch from your eyes and they achieve reasonable
clarity.  Now start pulling them away and see what happens to your image
clarity, distortion etc.  Contact lenses are much better because they've
reduced that distance to nothing.  Even if you'd be able to compensate for
the distance, you would have NO peripheral vision, which is not a good
thing.
