Actually, it makes a pretty good backrest.  And the little backrest pad
thingie that is sold for an additional US$30 doesn't do much.  

Also, make sure your passenger has AT LEAST as good of gear as you do.
I hate when I see pillions wearing some second-hand helmet that is way
too big, without gloves, etc.
