[ST] Need rib fracture advice, please

Dear Listmates:

Thanks so much for the kind emails, prayers, thoughts, offers of help, and
well-wishing over the accident Jeff had. We are waiting on bloodwork and
x-rays to be read from Friday, but so far it looks like the original rib
fractures may be the extent of the injuries. There is some concern about
his knee, so it was x-rayed Friday, but the VA shut down for a few days and
we won't know for awhile. They are also monitoring his chest for any sign
of pneumonia or damage from the ribs.

Several of you mentioned you had broken ribs before. Jeff himself cracked
some ribs in Gulf War I, but he says this is definitely different because he
can feel his broken ribs moving around.

He seems to want to sleep more now that the first few days after the wreck.
It has been eight days now. Is sleep more important than anything else?
How much time should I make him walk down the hall or use the breathing
machine the doctor prescribed. I don't want him to get pneumonia or get so
stiff that his recovery is worse, but I also don't want to impede his
recovery by not letting him sleep enough. All advice is greatly appreciated
and thanks again!

Janice
