Same thing happened to me on the way to the second Colorado rallye.  
Turned out I had a broken wire inside the ignition assembly; if I bent 
the wires coming out of the assembly in just the right way I could get 
the tail lights to come back on.  Ended up having the dealer replace 
the assembly, so now I'm living with three keys for the bike.
