Rupert, great write up.  I really appreciate your maintenance insites and web site, great information.  I have a 2000 with 11,000 miles on it currently.  I have had 0 problems to date.  I had to  replace the wheel bearing on my 95 vfr once and may need to again soon, it has nearly 100,000 miles on it.  My GL1500 had the frot wheel bearings replace at about 60,000.  I may start packing the bearing with grease every time I change my front tires as someone else suggested.
