It's a 2000 :-( I'm the 3rd owner. I bought it last year when it had about
1500 miles on it. There is a Power Commander on it, but otherwise no engine
mods.

I agree; if you bought the bike in 2002 or later, it should still be under
warrantee, and this would definitely be covered (unless you made
modifications to the engine). I would go that route first; a new engine
can't be cheap...
