I keep a Battery tender on mine, No problem at all (3 years) except when I 
left the parking light on.  I have used this on boats which were never used 
and I believe it improves battery life.  You just hook a set of leads to the 
battery permanently and it just plugs in, I just stuff the wire in the hole 
in the fairing below the front of the seat (ST).   If you could get the 
accessory plug to attach to the battery tender would be even more elegant, 
but more expensive.

Anyway, I swear by these Battery tender things, they cost about $50.  I 
don't make any money when a Battery Tender is sold, but I sure wouldn't 
mind.
