Re: [ST] GPS?

Al,
I run a Garmin GPS V+ which works very well for me but is far from the hot
setup at this time. I have to load detailed maps from my PC into it I go on
trips and it is limited by about 19megs of memory on those maps. Smaller
B&W display which I mount using a RAM (a company that makes mounts for these
things) mount that fits on the front tank bolt and it sits right above the
tripple clamp. Excellent position.

The most common units talked about today are the Garmin Street Pilot III
Deluxe and the Street Pilot 2610 or 2650. These are pricey units of about
$700 and up. Have a lot of features for routing and can store all the maps
you might ever need on memory cards. They have color displays but some use
touch screen technology which I personally am not fond of because I wear
gloves. Some also have audio routing where a voice tells you directions,
again, I personally don't need another audio input that I can't hear above
the wind and engine noise.

Megellan makes the Road Mate which are touch screen and one model has a hard
drive in it with all the detailed maps for around $1500. There is also the
Garmin iQue which is like a Palm Pilot with GPS. Great unit but could have
mounting problems and its hard to use a stylus on a bike.

My personal favorate is the Garmin GPS 276C which has yet to be released.
The screen map and text display are, for me, are the perfect size and it
does everything the Street Pilots do exept audio routing. There is an older
version of the unit too but it has very limited routing functions because it
is built for marine use.

Hope this helps, I'm sure that you know that I wasn't able to cover
everything. I'll be happy to answer any specific questions. I don't work
for Garmin or sell GPS units, but do use them in my work of making maps.

Rod
