i have heard the recommendation that you cover the VIN on your car
dashboard, because crooks can take down the number and get a key made at a
dealership for that brand of car. sure, you're supposed to ID, etc., but a
good actor ["My purse was stolen...", batting of eyelashes, deep eye
contact...] or a crooked employee can bypass the rules and leave you
car-less.
