Thanks for the hints and the link. I did try and do it without removing
the fairing, but I couldn't get my hands in and see what I was doing.
So I ended up taking the fairing off, and even then was non-trivial
getting access to the back of the light. However, having finally worked
out how to spring the sprung wire, I suspect I could do it without
removing the fairing if I have to change the bulb again... Having said
that, once you work it out I suspect getting the fairing off could be a
fairly quick activity too...

Anyhow - I now have my SuperWhite bulbs in and working, and pleased to
report that they make a significant difference (for the better) to the
illumination provided. Phew!

Thanks again for everyone's help on this.

Regards

You remove the electricla plug along with the boot. Once the rear of the bulb is exposed you can see the thin metal wire clip that holds the bulb into the cavity. It is very easy to unclip the sprung wire and swing it out of the way. On my right side, I somehow broke the small piece that surrounds one end of that metal clip which becomes the pivot point. It took me quite a while to fabricate my own clip holding mechanism. Be careful these are fragile.

Hello

Following useful suggestions about improving lights on my 03 ST, I have
obtained two SuperWhite Xenon H4 bulbs to install. So just need to
install them...
