I have tried up shifting without the clutch a few times. 
It does work, but I have found that 1st to 2nd you need the clutch to get 
through neutral, 2nd to 3rd is ok but sometimes the bike does protest, all the 
rest are ok but with such light pressure required on the clutch lever I use it 
anyway. This technique is really for racing to get through the gears quickly 
and without losing revs and time. I have had mixed reports from mechanics as to 
the stress this places on various components and if its detrimental to the 
bike or not.
