I'm not implying that pressure has anything to do with cupping, quite the
opposite in fact.
In my experience, tire pressure DOESN'T affect life of the tire nor cupping.
I used to get bad cupping on fairly new Dunlop K70's on my '73 Bonneville,
but never saw it again until Bridgestone BT-020's on my RS.
Damned if I know what really causes it, but my suspension guy (P. Kates at
GMD Computrack Boston) says it's caused by tire design, and worsened by poor
damping of the forks. I know this was true of my cars back when I was poor,
driving well-used sh*tboxes that desperately needed new shock absorbers.
I might theorize that a lower pressure would help in damping tire bounce,
reducing cupping. I really think it's more a characteristic of a particular
tire design, and BT-020's are one of those.
Purely anecdotal analysis, with no basis in fact. ;)

Ken,
Would you mind elaborating a bit on how to tire pressure affects cupping?
It sounds a little like you are suggesting that lowering the pressure a bit
can help stretch front tire life expectancy.
Or does lowering the pressure actually improve how a cupped front tire
behaves (and not necessarily the mileage you'll get)?
I've always kept the front pressure at the recommended 36 psi to the bitter
end.
