Hi Fred.
It may be very difficult to unscrew. Like said Dan, you need a long breaker, WD-40 if not removed for a long time.
I achieved this by strapping the rear wheel to a solid post (my wife standing on rear brake was not sufficient). The tyre against the post and straps around rim and post.
The nut may also have been secured by some glue, loctite or eq. I had not to heat the nut but perhaps it may be necessary in some cases.
