Re: [ST] Lane Splitting II

In the UK we have a motorway called the M25 - it's also known as the
world's largest car park - and it rings London. Around the Heathrow
Airport area it gets particularly dense as they are trying to widen it
(I think!). I did a full circuit for fun but chose a Friday afternoon
(bad mistake) and naturally started filtering (lane splitting) as the
average speed dropped to 5mph. However, after 5 miles of speeding up
and slowing down I found I was still doing it when the average was 50mph
and the effect was rather hypnotic. I was having to ask myself if I
could really identify the threat from cars if they did something
irrational.

So, yes it's the norm here but it is still at the riskier end of riding
options.

You ought to come to the UK if you want to see 'scary' - 'lane
splitting'
(never heard it called that before) is the norm rather than the
exception in
and around major towns: in the rush hour you'll see dozens of bikes
doing
this in the slow traffic into London. On the major route I go into /
out of
London now and again, if you are on a bike and not as hot as some at
lane
splitting you end up with a queue of bikes following you... Mostly
happens
at slowish speeds (cars at zero through to 40 mph) but have seen it
regularly on high speed congested motorway routes too (at 70mph or
more).
