Re: [ST] commuting

I have a Subaru Impreza 2.5 (27 MPG, $20K) and a Sprint RS (50 MPG, $10K). My commute is 36 miles one way via the PA Turnpike (toll road). It's 45 miles via back roads. The Impreza takes regular, the Sprint takes premium. I factored in gas, oil changes, valve adjustments, turnpike tolls and tires and came up with the following daily commute cost based on $2.20 for regular, $2.40 for premium:

Car: $11.00/day (72 miles total via turnpike)
Bike: $10.69/day (90 miles via back roads)
Bike: $11.55/day (72 miles via turnpike with discounted tolls)

So it's pretty much a wash for me ignoring depreciation on the vehicle. If I include depreciation (totally written off at 150K for the car, 100K for the bike), the bike is a little more economical. It's really depressing to think I use up $10 of my bike's value a day due to commuting. A nice day ride (400 miles) costs $40 just in bike value.
