[ST] Cupping

Matt, very interesting article. Makes allot of sense. However, it makes me wonder if there is also another mechanism for cupping wear.

I say that because I live in the land of the flat and straight, i.e. FLA. I'd say, 95% if not more or my riding is done upright and straight. On the rare occasion I do get to enjoy lean angle, it's not for very long. I can't believe that the road surface is that abrasive to wear my tire that fast for the short time I'm scraping footpegs.

Tell you what. I won't get to it until at least Wednesday, but I'll try to take a clear picture and document it to explain what I'm experiencing on my pilot roads.

Another reason I believe there are other forces at work, and maybe even the manufacture of the tires themselves is:

My riding hasn't changed all that much over the last four years as it's been in FLA all that time. During that time I'm on my third set of rubber. First were the OEM Bridgestone's (I think Battlax BT020's), then Michelin Macadam 100X's, and now the Pilot Roads.

1) Bridgestone's "cupped" bad on the front.
2) 100X's were fantastic, no noticeable abnormal wear.
3) The Pilot Road, "cupping" as bad as the Bridgestone's.

My riding conditions and style have remained fairly consistent for all three sets. So why is one better than another? Manufacturing technique, rubber compound, tread pattern, or a combination of all three? I don't know. Maybe cupping is the wrong term for what I have experienced. Maybe it's something else.

I'll really try to post pictures and tap the collective for opinions.

Rich
