Many people die of "stroke" or "heart attack" following a severe break of a major bone, purely because the risk of a large blood clot (from the bone marrow injury) in the blood stream is very high.

Riding a bike exposes you to the risk of a severe break, so you have to do the best you can to anticipate what the box pilots will do next.

I do a number of other activities my friends say are reckless for a family man : I surf in False Bay, Cape Town - one of the biggest concentrations of great white sharks in the world, and I windsurf off the west coast where currents and big surf mean you have to be careful.

Even just living here has its risks, the violent crime rate is higher than it should be.

The way I figure it : be careful, enjoy it and what happens - happens.

Rather live life to the max (responsibly), than go out at a ripe old age full of regrets at all the things you didn't do, but wanted to.
