You're right.  After you mentioned it I realized I got pneumatic and hydraulic mixed up.  I was just going from memory of an article I read months ago.

I don't know about the Aprilia, but F1 engines use pneumatic valves  
because springs can't handle the high RPMs the F1 engines run.
