Not to get into an East vs. West of Denver "horn-lock" but ain't that 11
mile stretch of road ya' all call the "Dragon=deals Gap" just a tad bit
overrated when compared to the near 100 miles of the very sparsely traveled,
550 turn, road called "191,666,Coronado Trail" that borders Eastern Az and
Western NM. Add in 180 South in NM and 78 "Mule creek road" that links the
two at the Southern end and you've got a once in a lifetime 200 mile twistie
trip and it's even single day accessible from Either Phoenix, Tucson AZ or
Albuquerque MN.

Next one might look at California highway 36 with near the same conditions
or a good deal of the roads in the state of Colorado; highway's 550, 23 or
you name it. And I've not even mentioned the myriad of roads around the two
largest California metro's in NORCAL & SOCAL, or around Seattle's "Windy
Ridge near Mt St. Helens", the Mt Hood road in Oregon or across the cascades
in Eastern Or.

It also seems like when ya'all Easterners come out West, "where the real
mountains reside in this country" you seem to pick places like Sturgis SD or
other prairie lands that most resemble your own terrain on the East side of
the Missouri river. Hell, just East of Phoenix there a 25 mile stretch that
rivals the "Dragon" known as "The historic Apache Trail", "US88, Tortilla
flats and a bunch of other names. (been hosted on "two wheel Tuesday" Speed
channel) It even has REAL scenery around it' lakes, mountains and such with
even a little dusting of snow in the winter. That road, far from Arizona's
best, is a mere 100 mile round trip ride from my subburban PHX home and has
an old cowboy style saloon on the road where we'll stop for breakfast on any
given weekend.

I was raised in Omaha Nebraska and the 1st time I remember being able to see
more than 20 miles, line of site, was when we went on our 1st SFBA family
vacation in 1957 to visit our West coast relatives. I think the last time I
intentionally went East of Denver (other than flying in on a business trip)
was back in 1970 when I was in the USAF and traveling to my next duty
station in Northern (Loring AFB) Me. I found the scenery monotonous and the
humidity stifling throughout most of the Midwest and Eastern seaboard. Maine
was pretty in a relative sort of way but we only stayed one year (-40
temps)until I pulled some strings and got stationed close to home in the
Northern SFBA county of Marin (comparable to Nassau Co in Long Island) at
the now defunct Hamilton AFB between San Rafael & Novato Ca (Close to where
dirty Harry was filmed).

Finally, I think HORRIS GREELEY said it best with his one liner, "Go West
young man":)
