Hi everyone,

Saw this, and thought that this might be the type of question that the=20=

very learned bods participating might be able to help with (e.g. how=20
long before bike fully charges a battery when riding...). Rob, if you=20=

don't already, you might want to subscribe to this list too, but if not=20=

I'll cross post any replies back to the SWeST list.

My ST is only the second bike I have owned that didn't have a=20
kick-starter (the first was a Z250 in early 80s), and the first to have=20=

alarm etc., so never really ever had thought that loss of charge was an=20=

issue... So I had a couple of flat battery events after I got the ST,=20=

and now I am a big believer in leaving my bike plugged into my Optimate=20=

III trickle charger. But have never really thought what I'd do if=20
there was no power supply to the garage.

Best regards

Gavin Lawrie

PS - as Rob is from Netherlands, I suppose another option would be to=20
introduce Rob to Emile...? :D

<fixed>I tried to start my ST today but not even a grunt from the
start engine, it</fixed>

<fixed> just managed a faint headlight. It wasn't totally unexpected
since it has</fixed>

<fixed> been 6 weeks that I rode my bike (frost, salt, storm and being
able to drink</fixed>

<fixed> as excuses..).</fixed>

<fixed> - So what are the best options to be able to drive anytime. I
know a</fixed>

<fixed> 'trickle loader' (is that the right word?) would be perfect,
but there's no</fixed>

<fixed> electricity in the garage, and it's not mine so I just have to
deal with</fixed>

<fixed> that fact.</fixed>

<fixed> I could take out the battery during a long rest period and
charge it at home</fixed>

<fixed> on a trickle loader but would the absence of a battery in the
bike affect</fixed>

<fixed> the presets? I do have a Spyball alarm and of course there is
the electronic</fixed>

<fixed> management system. The alarm would of course be useless if it
is</fixed>

<fixed> disconnected for a longer time.</fixed>

<fixed> Would I need two batteries which I change every month or =
so?</fixed>

<fixed> Should I make a line-up with a big fat car battery in parallel
so it takes</fixed>

<fixed> more time to drain?</fixed>

<fixed> Jumpstarting would also be a possibility, but it might be a
long way home if</fixed>

<fixed> the engine hiccups before it has been loaded enough to restart
again on it's</fixed>

<fixed> own power.</fixed>

<fixed> - How long should the engine be running just to compensate for
the energy</fixed>

<fixed> lost when starting, thus after how many miles (kilometers) the
battery</fixed>

<fixed> charges more than it has used for the startup?</fixed>

<fixed> - How long can the time between rides be without emptying the
batteries?</fixed>

<fixed> Just as an inducation, of course it depends on the accesoires
and the state</fixed>

<fixed> and loading of the battery.</fixed>
